The Psalms
Read by Alex Jennings
UNABRIDGED
The 150 Psalms contain some of the most inspiring lines in the Old Testament: Psalm 23 ‘The Lord is My Shepherd’ and Psalm 121 ‘I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills’. Yet few know them as a set, and this recording, in Alex Jennings’s clear performance, allows us to consider them as a whole. They are not all uplifting and comfortable. Many involve darker sentiments of revenge or punishment; many appear to be by David or about David; others are To the chief Musician upon Gittith. Their variety is part of their strength and their power, especially in the magisterial language of the King James Bible used here. They are presented with English choral music from the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries.

Review by Sue-Ellen Beauregard
This CD contains the complete Book of Psalms read by British actor Alex Jennings. His measured pace and comfortable tones are most mesmerising, as are brief musical interludes featuring choral and instrumental songs from the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Jennings announces each Psalm by its numeric number. Prior to the reading of the familiar Psalm 23, a chorus sings beginning portions of the inspirational verse. His British pronunciations (pronouncing the ‘h’ in herb for example) are never distracting. Because the 150 Psalms are poetic and don’t necessarily follow a pattern, this seems better suited to short bursts of listening. An excellent choice for those interested in hearing rather than reading the King James Version of the Book of Psalms.
